Fashion with Local Flavor

Fashion has never been as global and culturally-diverse as it is today. Which is why it seemed like a good time to work with something that was inherently local, and to find the beauty in things around us which are, very often, overlooked. Ever since the “Green Couture” show using recycled materials that friend Candy Dizon organized over a year ago, the idea of playing with fashion that drew inspiration from materials that are usually under appreciated and discarded kept playing in my head. For fun, we recently experimented on a fashion shoot with dusky beauty, Farah, showing a...

Inspirational Photos of the Day

Doodling, sketching, drawing…give me a pencil and some ink and I’ll happily draw on anything, receipts, napkins, parking tickets. Drawing is something I’ve enjoyed since I was a child because it helps me better visualize the random ideas that are floating around in my head. It also helps me relax and clear my mind because once I put a design on paper–whether I’m ready to execute it or not–I can dump it from my memory banks! (In college, I was fortunate enough to have had one of the best artists/illustrators, Robert Alejandro, as a most inspiring teacher and I remain a huge, huge fan of his work to this day.) When designing I always begin with a sketch, but funnily enough I sometimes end with a sketch too, because some of my clients/good friends give me a free hand to draw on their clothes as well 🙂 Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

“We’ve got mail”! It’s a testament to the current digital age that Ito and I were browsing online one minute & receiving our package and propping it up on our wall just a few days later 🙂 Love it! And like the quickly changing times, new Filipino artists are bringing in fresh ideas all the time, creating art that’s dynamic and making it easily accessible to everyone. Their works are always such an inspiration because their perspectives are so unexpected, like this interesting oil & acrylic on wood painting by young visual artist Chalk Zaldivar (that is currently sitting atop our china cabinet). Supporting local artists, illustrators and designers is one of the best ways to get inspired, and to keep the cycle of inspiration going. I love lace when it’s pristine, dainty, pretty, delicate, ethereal…I also love it when it’s stained, burned, ripped and more than a little frayed at the edges. Lace can be innocent or experienced, old fashioned or of-the-moment, buttoned-up or rock ‘n roll. It’s one of my favorite materials, whether it’s made by hand, embroidered by machine, or cut by laser (even paper-doily lace and crocheted-style curtain lace attract me…and our local callado hand-embroidered lace is just so beautiful!). I’ve always thought that one of the great things about fashion design is that it allows traditional materials and crafts to be constantly reworked and appreciated in new ways 🙂 What’s your favorite ‘old-school’ material and how do you like to update it? Inspirational Photo of the Day

(Photo by Ito Ocampo) Why settle for 50 shades of grey when the stark contrast of black and white just looks sooo good? After seasons of bright, flamboyant, exuberant, OTT colors and prints, black and white comes as such a welcome palate cleanser for the eyes. I love this photo of the “Piano Man” that Ito snapped as we walked to lunch one weekend in Powerplant mall–the black & white piano keys together with the black jacket, white pocket square, ribbed tie & brimmed hat hit just the right musical and fashion notes! A cool, clean and contrasting combination 🙂 Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...
