Black & White to Blue & Red

From black-tie formal to rock ‘n roll denim…dressing up this week really ran the full spectrum! On top of fashion design work, attending fashion events is part of every designer’s job-description (oh, the dry cleaning bills we rack up!). Tonight though, I’m really happy to just be at home, wearing my favorite linen shorts and cotton tank top and having an early night in…ahhh, true luxury is a good night’s sleep! Fashion Tips: Mixing High & Low

Whether it’s designer clothes, accessories, or even home furnishings, mixing high and low is always more interesting than matching similar pieces because of the unexpected contrast it provides. Imagine wearing an intricately beaded designer skirt with combat boots, or positioning a gilt-framed painting by a worn-out wooden bench–surprising yet chic! This heirloom diamond and sapphire tennis bracelet, for example, is elegant (if a little old-fashioned) on its own, but it gets a much needed fashion-boost and gains street credibility when thrown together with wooden beads and a native ikat weave into an eclectic mix. What do you think of...

Inspirational Photo of the Day

Often overlooked and under-appreciated, it’s the little details in fashion that have always fascinated me. Interesting buttons, unexpected trim, decorative stitching, and unusual closures like this corded, double hook and eye are what often draw my eye.  Whether on an elaborate gown or a simple shirt, it’s those elements that are often hidden away that often speak volumes. Rather than the obvious flourishes, I find that these small, subtle features are what help give a design some edge and a more distinctive personality. One Year Old

With the chaos and craziness of the past few rainy weeks, I didn’t realize that this blog turned a year old last August 12. Yay! That’s 365 days–but not 365 posts although I tried, LOL!–of attempted design introspection and my personal take on fashion (my first blog entry here: “Redesign Process”). Working in a dynamic and creative field, I’ve realized that as a fashion designer, what we ultimately share with other people are our inspirations, our dreams and our daily experiences that eventually find their way into our sketchpads and designs. So on this blog’s first year, I’m sharing with you some of my memorable firsts as a fashion designer: First fashion design sketch & gown (Concours International de Jeunes Créateurs de Mode, Paris) First bridal gown design & show (piña silk with hook & eye beadwork and snakeskin leather corset in Mega magazine) First collection (Jewelmer HK show apple-print and vinyl street collection) First fashion design exhibit & book launch (“Not By the Book: Fashioning Design”) Do you still remember any of your fashion firsts? Or those exciting first steps that you took towards something you wanted? I’d love to hear your creative and inspiring stories (fashion-related or otherwise). You can drop me a note in the comments section or email me at tippi@tippiocampo.com or. Let’s all celebrate our memorable firsts together! 🙂 Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post...

Fashion Tips: Pearl Jam!

Pearls–whether heirloom or costume–are always a classic, and here in the Philippines we have them in abundance (you can even buy them while lounging on the beach!). I’ve designed gowns embellished with pearls and most women wait for a formal occasion to bring out their strands to wear with a gown or LBD, but one of my long-time favorite combinations has been mixing denim with pearls. It’s the contrast of prim and proper ladylike jewelry against rough ‘n tumble utilitarian work-wear fabric that creates the interest. Try them piled on with your favorite boyfriend jeans, or maybe pin a...
