Birthday Brunch

My birthday this year fell on a Sunday, which made it the perfect day to just have a loooong, laaaaazy brunch with family.  Luckily, after all the recent storms, the sunny weather was just perfect for a drive down to Tagaytay for brunch at one of our favorite restaurants, Antonio’s, where we ate enough steak, drank enough wine and ate even more dessert to last us til dinner (and beyond).  Obviously my birthday resolution beginning today is to go on a serious DIET…but life’s too short not to over indulge every once in a while, right? 😉 Everyone’s greetings through facebook, twitter, texts and calls really added to making my birthday even more special.  Having such great family and friends all around and being allowed to enjoy so many of life’s amazing experiences year after year are really all I could possibly wish for.  Life is good and I’m extremely grateful! *Thanks to Ito & John for the pics! What I Would Tell My 21-Year Old Self

My birthday is just a few days away, so it’s timely that I was invited to contribute an article for this month’s Metro magazine titled “What I Would Tell My 21-Year Old Self” (together with the super beautiful & super admirable Tetta Matera) because it got me thinking about how much experience we gain with each additional candle placed on our birthday cake… (Like the MTV series used to say, you think you know, but you have no idea…) From where I currently sit, sketching out a couple of designs while mulling on the subject of my 21-year old self, I realize I’m nowhere close to where I thought I would be at this point in my life.  Fresh out of college, my 21-year old self thought she had it all figured out.  My future life had been planned and laid out like a ‘dress for success’ manual—arm oneself with focus, put on enough motivation, dress with determination, spritz on a little charm and success was guaranteed.  What I didn’t know then was that life was less like perfectly coordinated power dressing, and more like throwing together an artlessly mismatched, casually chic ensemble. So what things do I know now that I would tell myself back then? Try on Different Things Take time to experiment and enjoy discovering things, about the world around you, about other people, about yourself....

Siem Reap: Old-World Charm

Cities with centuries-old history always get my heart beating a little bit faster, and a few months ago we celebrated a very good friend’s milestone birthday in Siem Reap, Cambodia, which turned out to be a really laid-back city with loads of old-world charm.  What surprised me most about Siem Reap was how relaxed the city was amidst these lush jungles and majestic, jaw-dropping temples. While their history is well-preserved, their ties with France were evident in the pretty colors and shuttered windows of the houses scattered along the roadside villages and in the Old French Quarter. The lack...

The Joys of Window Shopping

Window display at Galeries Lafayette, Paris Outdoor installation at Ion Mall, Singapore Window displays have long been my guilt-free indulgence of choice, and I usually get a (cheap!) thrill just looking at imaginative windows and store decor when traveling abroad.  My favorite ones are those that almost look like elaborate still-life settings or installation pieces–total visual eye candy!  I remember when Sari-sari store first opened in Manila, they always had the most interesting window and store displays, some of them taken from installation art found around the UP College of Fine Arts where I was studying then (I heard they used to hire students to create their window displays). Today we had the first briefing for the judging of the Ayala Malls Merchant Rewards visual merchandising & Christmas decor competition, and I’m looking forward to seeing the different displays that each store that we visit will have.  Visual merchandising is a really important aspect of a store’s design because it’s the first thing that catches a potential customer’s eye and hopefully draws them into a store and maybe even keeps them there longer. More than just an afterthought, local stores should seriously invest in their visual merchandising displays and holiday decorations, and consider hiring a designer (or even a fine arts or design student) to create displays that are both visually appealing and that communicate the values of the...

…More Food as Fashion…

Here are a few more images I found of the amazing ‘dresses’ from Sung Yeon Ju’s “Wearable Foods” exhibit (found on Trendland.net)…though the first three dresses that I posted were my favorites, any of these photos would be amazing in a dining room beside a still-life bowl bearing fruits or vegetables of the same kind as the photo 🙂 Red cabbage White radishes Winter mushrooms Spring onions Winter mushrooms Lotus roots Bubblegum Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...
