Designing Doppler

Subtlety of sound is not something most of us Filipinos are aware of–we like talking loud, love blaring our horns, enjoy cranking up our music (guilty as charged!).  But there are times when less is more, when quality is preferred over quantity.  My brother, John, has long been trying to educate me on the nuances and finer points of sound, and I must admit to being quite hopeless, because what I see is really important to me, and just the sight of all those wires snaking around and the big, in-your-face speakers really turn me off. A tech-geek and audiophile-in-the-making, John finally invested in setting up his own sleek, unobtrusive, high-end audio rental business called Doppler Audio, which is perfect for intimate parties & gatherings of around 50 people or less.  Great for the upcoming holiday season!  My favorite thing, of course, being that it looks as good as it sounds 🙂  For packages beginning at just P1,750, you can enjoy amazingly clear sound quality at your party (includes microphone and some party lights), without throwing off the whole look of your decor or party theme. Fashion & Beauty

In light of all the beauty products and beauty treatments that are now so readily available, and the prevalence of the science and business of beauty, it’s the nature of beauty that actually interests me more.  I was just interviewed on what I thought made a woman sexy and beautiful, which got me thinking about how misguided many of our concepts of beauty are these days.  To look like a doll, or be eternally young, pale white, with long, computer-generated hair, and clinically-enhanced features has become the current standard of beauty–which, to my mind, doesn’t do true beauty any...

Bedside Reading

When things get really busy, I need a book to slow me down.  I’m currently reading “Parisian Chic:  A Style Guide by Inès de la Fressange” which I found when I went to the Manila Book Fair a few weeks ago.  It’s a clever book, a paperback designed to look like a leather-bound book, complete with gold-stamped printing on its pleather wrapped cover.  Inès de la Fressange was my style idol during my high school years, a woman born into an aristocratic family who became Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite muse and the face of Chanel in the 80’s. What I love about this book is that, while it’s essentially a style guide around Paris–sharing little-known galleries, hole-in-the-wall vintage stores, neighborhood cafés, and out-of-the-way designer boutiques–it can also be seen as a guide to exploring one’s own city and discovering it’s local treasures.  Flea markets, the local grocery, vintage shops…these are just some of a Parisian’s go-to places that have become my favorite hunting grounds to rummage for finds over the years. Ito and I discovered these pristine French Salon chairs completely covered in cling-wrap at a local vintage store in Evangelista Street These chic, whimsical mobiles by Ral Arogante can often be found at Art in the Park in Salcedo Park One of my favorite style tips in the book is to look for the ‘essence’ of things, and to...

Stormy Tuesday

It’s howling, storming, and flooding around Manila today with most people deciding to keep off the streets and stay home.  I’ve decided to catch up on my reading today, and maybe do some designing & writing from the ‘office’ corner of my dressing room at home.  Luckily we haven’t lost our internet connection or had any power outages despite the storm, but from what I’ve been seeing online, many parts of the city (especially those by Manila Bay) are massively flooded with huge waves slapping onto the breakwater reaching the tops (!) of the coconut trees, while other parts of the city are underwater & have lost their electricity already. This was the waist-deep flooding at the US Embassy along Roxas Boulevard this morning (photo by Ian Castaneda from GMA News) along with this video ( Typhoon Hits Philippines) from the Associated Press As I write this, the rain and winds seem to have abated somewhat, and I’m hoping that the worst of the storm has already passed.  So far, the trees in our garden are still standing, and unlike last year’s deluge during Ondoy, this time our garden didn’t suddenly surprise us with a new backyard pool.  I read online that the storm is leaving the Philippine vicinity at noon tomorrow, so I’m praying for everyone’s safety until then…in the meantime, I’m still keeping our mobile phones and...

Inspirational Work: Pop Art

It’s a stormy Monday and I’m working from home, designing some very interesting pieces for a couple of clients of mine.  One of them is a Vegas-inspired dress made out of playing cards! So fun 🙂 It’s a very Pop Art kind of dress, which is great because Pop Art was undoubtedly my favorite art period growing up.  I loved its youthful, rebellious, irreverent spirit, and among its artists Andy Warhol, Keith Haring & Roy Lichtenstein were my early favorites.  The fact that the graphic, oftentimes humorous, nature of Pop Art works so well with fashion is another plus, which is why it’s been an influence of mine for some time now… One of my first gifts to Ito was a painting I made on glass–a rip off of Lichtenstein’s “In the Car” (I changed the features of the male and female to look a little more like Ito and me, LOL!).  You can write different messages in the empty ‘bubble’ with a magic marker Roy Lichtenstein, “In the Car”, 1963 “Chocolate Sundae” dress, with chocolate brown satin bodice and strawberry pink ice-cream petticoat A favorite past collection of mine was for Traits très mode of Alliance Francais which featured dresses with graphic embellishments & illustration details inspired by the art of various French illustrators For a good friend of mine named “Candy”, I once designed a top inspired...
