Holiday Gift Giving

The end of September is fast approaching, and while I know that Halloween hasn’t even come around yet, here in Manila the countdown to Christmas has already started!  Talk about getting a head start on the craziness of the ‘holidaze’… Beginning this weekend, I’m planning to scour the markets, arts & crafts fairs and on-line sites for interesting items that would make great gifts for the holiday season.  Some of the best gifts I have received from friends in past years were not necessarily the most expensive, but I really appreciated their personal touch and they were definitely the most imaginative & beautifully creative gifts that I still treasure to this day… I’ve always loved accessories of all shapes and sizes–beads, brooches, baubles–and have been collecting them for as long as I can remember.  A few Christmases ago, a client and good friend of mine, Lou Rulloda, gifted me with this really pretty neck piece that combined a pearl strand with ribbons, charms & a fitting form–absolutely adorable!  Do check out her little jewel box of a site and score some unique pieces for yourself, or to give as gifts, at Bijoux de Lou. I absolutely adore this set of notecards given by good friend Cynthia Bauzon-Arre with her beautiful illustrations of different types of girls doing their favorite things, from playing with their tabby cat, to relaxing with...

Play on Patterns

There’s a whole other side to pattern-making that I love, and it has to do with the visually arresting–sometimes pretty, sometimes humorous, sometimes graphic–patterns that are currently the toast of fashion.  Prints and patterns are everywhere now, and not just on the fashion capitals’ runways… Kimono prints & patterns are just so amazingly beautiful–they are an art form all on their own I love the pattern of these Monet-like water lilies–can you imagine this on a long, flowy dress? This art deco building in Binondo has been around for ages and the pattern is timeless The watercolor print on these bridesmaids dresses is almost as pretty as Candy, Milan & Rachel A study in creative chaos–the mix of patterns on this painting is crazy, but it works! The intricate, lacy, very feminine patterns on this temple in Siem Reap reminded me of embroidery Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

Fashion’s Future Looks Bright

With so much creativity and new design talent bursting forth in the Philippines at the moment, I feel we are at the brink of even bigger things for our local fashion industry.  Compared to fashion industries abroad, ours is quite literally still a toddler and in many ways not even an ‘industry’ just yet, but Filipinos have always been quick learners and our creativity & chutzpah are inherent, so for now we can focus on developing our natural strengths when it comes to our fashion industry.  If the entire fashion community works together, there are no limits to what can be achieved. The other day, the Fashion & Design Council of the Philippines (FDCP) presented 20 finalists for its “Weaving the Future” Philippine Fashion Design Competition at JUMP, which will culminate in the final competition in November (watch out for that!).  And yesterday, Preview magazine presented their first ever PEFTA (Preview Emerging Fashion Talent Awards) with a fashion show in the Rigodon Ballroom of Peninsula Manila featuring the mini-collections of their 10 finalists.  At the end of the show, two winners were announced, Xernan Orticio and Erika Adona…but without a doubt, the true winner in all this is really the Philippine fashion industry that is reaping the rewards of so many amazing talents. Not Your Typical Bridal Theme

Robots and VW Kombis is not a usual theme for a wedding–in fact, I can safely say that in over a decade of being in fashion and designing for weddings I have never come across a theme like this one!  It’s an oddball kombi-nation (pun intended), to say the least, which is why it intrigued me so much, but after meeting Ramon and Vina for the first time during our initial consultation it started to make a little sense.  They are such a quirky and adorable couple!  But it was when I finally received their very kooky, very unusual...
