Golden Globes 2012

It’s always a visceral thrill to see what Hollywood stars are wearing during awards season, and this morning’s Golden Globes was no exception.  More than just beautiful clothes, it’s interesting to see stars wearing ‘directional’ pieces, or styles that point to new directions in fashion.  Many times these styles end up on E!’s Fashion Police, or tabloid magazines’ worst-dressed lists, but fashion has always been about experimenting & pushing forward. Of course there were lots of amazing gowns to look at, and I’ve always loved vintage/Old Hollywood, but today I found myself drawn to different pieces.  Now these may not be the most gorgeous or intricate gowns, but these were the pieces I found most interesting on the red carpet–I loved the proportions, the interesting details, the unusual use of color, and, oh, the natural waist!  What do you think of these gowns? Inspirational Photo of the Day

A not-by-the-book look–inspiration is everywhere!  Random snapshots of things found around the city that get the creative juices flowing… “Balanghai” kinetic sculpture, Leo Gerardo Leonardo I am such a big fan of public artwork!  I think Metro Manila would do well to have more of them scattered around the city.  Ito & I often pass this sculpture when we walk from my drawing room in Fairways Tower to Burgos Circle where we grab an afternoon snack or some dinner.  It’s a large metal sculpture with colors that turn iridescent when hit by the sun–it reminds me of jewelry.  And it moves with the wind–what’s not to love? Pop Art at Vinyl On Vinyl

One afternoon while driving around Makati, Ito, my brother, John, and I passed by The Collective and decided to drop in & have a snack.  While munching on chicken satés & having Vietnamese coffee at Kaffir, we were drawn to the exhibit that was just ending at VinylOnVinyl, the eclectic pop art/toys/music gallery right beside the little restaurant. It turns out that the exhibit was by an Indonesian artist named Arkiv Vilmansa who created fluid, graphic, acrylic on canvas paintings depicting his impressions of the Philippines & his trip to Boracay.  Abstract in nature, with saturated colors and undulating lines that leave an impression of an image rather than a literal representation, the exhibit is just one in a series of exhibits going on at VinylOnVinyl that mix Filipino culture with a fresh, unexpected, contemporary point of view. Just one of the reasons to skip out of the mall every now and then, and discover the many interesting things happening around Manila 🙂 This artwork which became the poster for the exhibit was inspired by the colors of the Philippine flag Inspired by the Jollibee icon, “The Believer”, acrylic & ink on canvas, Arkiv 2011 Even the wall & circuits outside VinylOnVinyl Gallery get the Pop Art treatment *VinylOnVinyl Gallery fuses local pop culture, toys, music and art in one contemporary space.  It’s located in The Collective, along Malugay...

Let’s Go Places!

Whether you’re in a creative field or not, sometimes we all just need to let go & let our imaginations fly.  Saw a brilliant video the other day of the ‘Burning Man’ annual art event in Nevada performing Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”.  I love it!  It’s a reminder to just get on our feet…get on our way…& just get going.  Check out the video here Burning Man Meets Dr. Seuss “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” (Photo by Scott London) Congratulations! Today is your day! You’re off to great places! You’re off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.’ -“Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”,  Dr. Seuss Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

Having Fun with Fashion

Forget ‘Fab’…forget ‘Fierce’…this year, it’s time to let our hair down and have ‘Fun’ once more with fashion. Colors, prints, wildly imaginative accessories are all the rage for spring/summer 2012 and the result is an exuberance we haven’t seen in years.  Here are some interesting ways to play with fashion in the coming months: 1.  Wear a dress.  Even if jeans & a tee are your usual uniform, why not try something even easier and slip on a dress?  Have a simple shift in cotton, linen or jersey made in a rainbow of colors and wear a different colored dress everyday. Try simple shifts in various colors Victoria Beckham in her own design 2.  Try on some prints.  Gingham checks, stripes, polka dots…or if you’re daring, wear bolder prints like scarf prints, aquatic prints, bird prints or graphic floral prints. Prints are fun worn simply or wildly mixed together Tippi Ocampo silk photo printed dress 3.  Boldly accessorize.  Accessories this season come with a fair amount of wit, humor and a dash of cheekiness.  Hats, bracelets, clutches, shoes…all are statement pieces that remind you not to take fashion too seriously. Prada Spring/Summer 2012 hot-rod inspired stilettos Dolce & Gabbana Spring/Summer 2012 scarf-wrapped wedges Remember, clothes are not just for covering up.  Fashion is creativity, fashion is expression, fashion is fun!
