It’s More Fun In The Philippines

http://www.itsmorefuninthephilippines.com The Philippine tourism slogan has finally been launched!  And it’s trending world-wide!  And there’s truth in advertising…things ARE more fun in the Philippines!  Maybe it’s our easy-going nature, our crazy sense of humor, our party-hardy ways, our love for family, friends & food…who knows?  Our prisoners are known to break out…in dance, everyone’s a karaoke champion, and we like to throw parties in the streets as a form of revolution.  If there’s one thing that Filipinos are–hands-down–the best at, it’s having a good time. So let’s share this ebullient, happy-go-lucky, sometimes rambunctious, but always good-natured vibe with the world.  Talk about it, write about it, post it on facebook or tweet it…what you think is more fun in the Philippines.  Let’s share with the world what fun means, Filipino-style 😉 Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

The Color of Sunrise

Despite the 5:30 am pick-up and 6:00 am call-time, it’s always fun to guest on Umagang Kay Ganda and yesterday was no exception 🙂  I was invited once again to guest on the show, this time to discuss the 2012 fashion trends that I last wrote about in my previous post “12 Trends for 2012” (which were interpreted with local clothes pulled out/lent by the show’s sponsors). I was also asked to give suggestions as to what the hosts and newscasters could wear based on the trends, and as soon as I arrived on set, it was obvious that hot hues & print was the winning choice!  Most especially shades of tangerine, which has been dubbed as the color of 2012.  Incidentally, tangerine/reddish-orange is also the color hue associated with creative energy, so it looks like there will be a lot of that this year! Hosts Phoemela Barranda and Venus Raj hamming it up on cam Venus Raj wears a Tippi Ocampo peach sorbet snakeskin coat & I’m wearing my tangerine silk brocade pants with pastel pink & raspberry The very beautiful, very statuesque, and very funny Venus Raj From model to host–the always gorgeous Phoem was one of my first models when I started designing years ago 2012 promises to be bright, colorful & very cheerful on Umagang Kay Ganda!  With the very lovely Donita Rose, Phoemela Barranda,...

12 Fashion Trends for 2012

It’s a whole new year, so can a whole new wardrobe be far behind?  These are my personal favorite fashion trends for spring/summer 2012 and I’ve collated those that are most adaptable to Manila and to the Filipina’s style sensibilities.  Here’s what I’m most inspired by, and excited to try out, in the coming months: 1.  Sorbet Shades – Neon colors were strong in the recent past, but for this summer I’m really loving cool, delicious, pastel shades.  Take inspiration from your favorite ‘sorbetero’ and wear colors as light and refreshing as ice cream.  Try the palest, prettiest shades of mango (yellow), ube (lavender), avocado (pale green) and strawberry (pink). 2.  Hot Hues – Strong, fruity colors like tangerine (dubbed THE color for 2012), orange, red and all shades of raspberry (from pale to deep pink) will be ubiquitous in the coming months.  These colors, worn individually or color-blocked, work especially well with the Filipina’s skin tone (whether morena, chinita or mestiza). 3.  Graphic/Baroque Details – Graphic swirls, curls and flourishes are one of my favorite design details, and this year they are given a stronger, more graphic touch.  Steal elements from our colonial, baroque past and wear pieces that are rich in intricate detail. 4.  Bold Florals – Nothing complements Manila’s tropical weather like bold florals.  What differentiates them from the dainty prints in the past is these...

Expect the Unexpected in 2012

It’s a slate wiped clean.  I woke up today to a bright, fresh, sparkling Sunday morning…and, yes, the birds are chirping.  I’ve made no resolutions this year except to be a blank sheet of fabric, ready to be shaped, draped, ruched, molded with more creativity, imagination & passion than I previously thought possible.  This year the possibilities, as well as the horizons, are endless.  This year, I’m ready to be surprised! 🙂 Rainbow Scarf, 2011 Paris-New York, 2010 Red, 2011 Gorgeous fabric sculptures of Parisian artist, Emilie Faif (2011) (http://emiliefaif.com) Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

Countdown to a New World

Personally, 2011 started off for me with a 360-degree view of a horizon line exploding with fireworks as we welcomed in the new year with corks popping and toasts on a rooftop.  Katy Perry’s “Fireworks” was playing, and it became my–and I suspect many people’s–unofficial theme song for ushering in 2012. And, boy, what a year 2011 was.  Unpredictable, exhilarating, shocking, euphoric, thrilling, chaotic…in a word, explosive.  If there was ever a year that defied expectations, 2011 was it, and it kept us all on our toes with its, sometimes, short fuse.  2011 was the year when we were...
