Inspirational Photo of the Day

In honor of Father’s Day, I posted one of my favorite ‘Pop Pieces’ from years ago, a backless halter top I designed from men’s silk ties when I was just starting out as a designer. Mens clothing has always been a favorite treasure trove of inspiration for me, taking something intrinsically masculine–like a tie, a barong tagalog, or a suit–and making it unmistakably feminine is always fun and interesting. Playing with opposites, creating contrasts and juxtaposing elements is one of the things I enjoy doing most in my designs πŸ™‚ Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

Fashion Freedom

Celebrating our Philippine independence and freedom extends to our fashion, and one of my favorite themes to experiment with over the years has been Filipiniana. Taking certain liberties with our national dress was not in any way being disrespectful, but simply a way of paying homage to a much-loved, iconic design and interpreting it for modern times πŸ™‚   Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

Inspirational Photo of the Day

Sam Spencer’s “Bloom” 2007 (Photo from the London Evening Standard) I love, love, love street art. And this photo of a street installation of Sam Spencer’s “Bloom” (that features yellow umbrellas “blooming” from an Oak tree) is one that I saw years ago and still can’t get out of my head. It’s pretty, it’s whimsical, it’s inspiring and it never fails to put a smile on my face! So, to welcome in June and the rainy season that has already hit our shores, I’m posting this pic to hopefully brighten up the coming gray days πŸ™‚ Happy weekend, everyone! PS- If I’m not mistaken, this installation was commissioned by the premium champagne brand Veuve Clicquot (hence the yellow color of the umbrellas). I wish more local brands would encourage creativity and commission interesting, intelligent pieces like this that everyday people can enjoy. Can you imagine, more street art instead of nonsensical billboards? πŸ˜‰ Bookmark on Delicious Digg this post Recommend on Facebook share via Reddit Share with Stumblers Tweet about it Subscribe to the comments on this...

From Imitation to Inspiration

We learn, initially, by copying others. We learn to talk by mimicking the sounds coming out of other people’s mouths, we learn to write by tracing scripted letters on a worksheet, we learn to dress ourselves by following what other people are wearing. But as we grow and mature, we have to find it in ourselves to remove the training wheels of imitation, and, wobbly as it may be in the beginning, slowly learn to trust ourselves by finding our way down our own path. In any creative field, whether it’s the arts, fashion, design, music, dance, literature or...

Cebu Islands: Final Days of Summer

I wish there were 500 days in my favorite season of the year! But stretching out what’s left of summer’s sunny days is the next best thing πŸ™‚ This week I’ve been mostly at home recovering from a cough/cold/allergy (there seems to be a bug going around), but in the past three weeks, Ito and I visited my favorite province–and my Mom’s hometown–of Cebu twice. First we spent five whole days relaxing in Shangri-La Mactan to celebrate Ito’s birthday and our 15th anniversary… Walking the stretch of white sand fronting the marine sanctuary Waiting for our brick-oven baked proscuitto...
