Some things that capture our attention are truly grand and breathtaking, while others sneak up on us with their quiet grace and whisper-soft beauty. Like this field of wild grass that looked like an ivory-white, feathery cape from a distance, billowing with the breeze. With its reed-thin golden stalks, it made quite an elegant, glamorous statement in the middle of the day at a most unlikely place! One of the enviable perks of being a fashion designer is being asked to take part in the most significant moments in a person’s life, from a first dance, to a graduation ball, to a debut, to a wedding (and every memorable event thereafter). These moments mark important transitions and passages for every woman–and man–and to be able to add a little sparkle of happiness to these very special occasions by creating custom-designed labors-of-love is really an honor that I am constantly grateful for. One of the designers who, quite literally, shaped my impressionable younger self back in the 80’s was the original designer of the now-ubiquitous ‘bandage’ dress…no, not Hervé Léger…but Azzedine Alaïa. The designer dressed every iconic Supermodel of that decade, from Naomi Campbell, to Cindy Crawford, to Christy Turlington, to Linda Evangelista. But what I especially liked about Alaïa was his background as a sculptor, which explained the sleek body-consciousness, as well as the tactile qualities, of his work. The soft ripples, the fluid movements, the froth-capped waves, the lacy salt patterns on the sand…nothing has inspired me recently as much as the beach. From its changing watercolor hues, to the scattering of glistening pebbles on its shores, the beach calms our minds, soothes our souls, and encourages us to dream.
