Inspirational Photo of the Day

A not-by-the-book look–inspiration is everywhere!  Random snapshots of things found around the city that get the creative juices flowing… Speaking of nostalgia…Manila, Manila–there ain’t no place like Manila! From Bonifacio’s High Street, we drove down memory lane the other day (or as most people call it, Roxas Boulevard). Historic, chaotic and iconic, nothing says classic Filipino like the city of Manila. Everything about it is symbolic almost to the point of cliché, from the monument of Rizal, to the kalesas that ply the streets, to the sunset, to the potted palms and brass & capiz chandeliers of Manila Hotel. If there’s one working city that can be turned–almost in its entirety–into a heritage site, it’s Manila! Jazz and Razzmatazz

Last Thursday night, Kevyn Lettau was scheduled to perform at Salon de Ning at The Peninsula Manila as part of the Philippine International Jazz Festival.  Ito and I dropped by to watch her perform and, as expected, Salon de Ning was full of jazz enthusiasts by the time we arrived. That night Kevyn played some beautiful (very personal) songs from her new album “Drawn to You” and sang some emotional ballads. Then she scatted through some lively jazz & bossa nova tunes like “One Note Samba” and “Waters of March”, and had fun free-styling favorite songs from her past...

Who’s That Guy??? It’s Adrien Brody!

Can you tell I’m just soooo kilig???! The last thing I thought of when I woke up yesterday morning was that I would meet Oscar-winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist, King Kong)…but then again, yesterday was a day that was just chock-full of surprises, so…! I didn’t recognize him at first and it was Ito who said “That guy looked sooo familiar. Wait, is the guy from ‘The Pianist’ in town?”, and I just panicked! He passed us several times and even smiled, but it took me a while to gather up the courage (and major kapal ng mukha) to...

Afternoon in the Park & an Evening with Friends

Yesterday was filled with some of my favorite things–great friends, delicious food and amazing art. Art in the Park, the annual art fair in Salcedo Park, was packed with people when we got there at 4pm. People were busy browsing the different booths and in the thick of shopping for interesting items or picking out their favorite pieces. Luckily the weather was good, if quite humid, and we ran into many of our friends as we wandered around the park. There was so much interesting art on display and so many unique fashion styles to look at, it was fun just soaking in the creative vibe and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of the whole place. Here are just a couple from some of the many, many pieces that caught my eye… Jenny Angel & Rommel Pidazo’s amazing piece that patchworked our  history with modern technology & found objects Leeroy New’s “Saprophyte” made from assorted plastic toys from Divisoria Ran into good friend, Meli, with her beautiful niece, Regina de Vera, who was modelling Leeroy New’s “Botany” Leeroy New’s “Sacred Heart” wall pieces blended religious iconography with a healthy dose of street sensibility… …I couldn’t resist purchasing his “Sacred Heart” pendant with the chains running through it 🙂 (Check out http://delirium.com.ph for other limited edition, specially designed pieces) Also bought some contemporary handmade pottery from Cornerstone Pottery Farm in Silang,...

Sunlight In My Drawing Room

It’s not everyday that one gets a literal dose of “Sunlight” while at work 🙂 One of the ubiquitous tunes of the early nineties in Manila, “Sunlight” was on everyone’s lips and the favorite feel-good song back then, and I remember how it never failed to put a smile on my face. International jazz singer, Kevyn Lettau, is in Manila once again for a series of shows including receiving an award at the Philippine Jazz Festival’s international gala night at the Rockwell Tent (she’s also just released a new album called “Drawn To You”). I met with her and...
