Not By the Book: “Vigan” Gown

A look at the journey from inspiration to fashion runway… Inspired by the lacy wrought-iron grillwork often found in Philippine colonial houses in Vigan, the very first gown I designed (for FDCP’s Philippine Fashion Design Competition, many years back) used copper-wire fashioned into curly-cues as beadwork, along with hundreds of miniscule black hook-and-eyes  which allowed the gown to be taken apart and transformed into different styles.   From inspiration… …to exhibit piece… …to the fashion runway!   “Not by the Book” is currently available in all Powerbooks outlets, select National Bookstores branches & all Best Sellers bookstores. It is now also available in Fully-Booked Bonifacio High Street, Greenbelt 5, Shangri-La Edsa, Greenhills, Eastwood, Trinoma & MOA. You may also order the book on-line.  For orders please email order@notbythebook.net (free delivery via 2GO within the Philippines). Taking It Slow

It’s Sunday and I wish I was by the ocean, listening to the waves, reading a book, and just relaxing.  Sundays are when I don’t answer work emails or texts (I wish I could say no to facebook and twitter too! LOL), and when slowing down is the order of the day.  I wrote this short verse a couple of years ago when I was on an empty stretch of beach…I was watching the changing tides and imagined that the beach was a big blank sheet of fabric.  Who knows, maybe it would make an interesting gown someday 🙂 *Photo by John Lacson A light rain Glosses its long, gray surface With a smooth, satiny sheen Waves wash in Like a tireless loom Frailly trimming its edges With delicate trails Of white salt lace Miniature crabs Pop their heads In and out, in and out Running needlepoint stitches Of swirling, intricate patterns Down its length A smattering of shells Glitter at its edges At last The velvet sky is drawn The winds begin to softly play A delicate brush Of sparkling dust Adds the final touch Before the veil of night is thrown Over its shoulders The golden orb is lit A pathway shimmers Atop the crests And as the waves rise and peak The tides beckon A final curtain call Claiming the day’s masterpiece Back towards the horizon...

Easy Dressing for the Holidays

The holiday season is often a marathon of events, parties & get-togethers–a challenge to test the mettle of even the most die-hard of fashionistas with the most flexible of credit card limits.  But binge shopping is not a fashion cure-all, and in fact, having too many clothes in your closet, and spilling out of it, can make dressing up harder instead of easier. Clean out your closet First things first…throw out everything that is worn out and doesn’t fit.  Then give away everything that is still in good condition but that you haven’t worn for the last six months.  The more clothes you have cluttering your closet, the more likely it is that you’re going to throw up your hands and cry “I have nothing to wear!”.  That’s because having too many clothes is like having an unedited collection…messy, sloppy, and with an unfocused fashion vision.  (Personally I’ve been streamlining my closet for a while now, but I still have some ways to go!) Raid your boyfriend’s or husband’s closet Men’s dress shirts (including their barongs!) look great on women, so stretch your own wardrobe by occasionally borrowing from the men in your life.  Mix masculine and feminine, so wear their dress shirt with your lacy skirt, or wear one of their printed silk ties with your simple shift instead of a necklace…the options are endless.  An oversized v-neck...

Fashion Matchmaking on Miss-match

Mix, match & mash-up the latest clothes available locally without having to spend a single centavo! Miss-match is the latest style site to hit the cyber fashion scene and it was dreamed up by some of the most creative people around–who also happen to come from one big happy family, AND happen to be good friends of mine 🙂  Brewed and concocted by FashionLab, the team behind Miss-match is comprised of Pierra, Toto, Pia, Albert & Chinggay Labrador. The LabRats, as they call themselves, are fashion, photography and design veterans who want to share a more fun, relaxed and experimental fashion experience with everyone. Chinggay Labrador has been writing, illustrating & designing for fashion magazines & books (including my own “Not By the Book: Fashioning Design”), so she’s included graphics and illustrations to inspire you to create your own mood-board.  And while Pierra & Toto Labrador have been photographing, styling, editing, writing  and creating fashion editorials for the top glossies for years, they’d like you to experiment and have a hand in putting together your own fashion look-book. There is also advice offered by different fashion industry insiders on putting together outfits for various occasions (Pierra invited me to share some fashion tips which are actually perfect for a Friday night out–check out top looks, above–on how to “Update Your Look with This Season’s Trends“).  I created the look...

Love Affair with Colors & Prints

There’s an ongoing, all-out love affair in the fashion world with colors and prints at the moment.  Following season after season of dull, monochromatic greys and post-apocalyptic blacks, the current enthusiasm for sorbet hues, candy colors, neon brights, stripes, plaids, pop prints, clashing-print-upon-print is…whew!…welcome, but sometimes overwhelming.  I’ve always loved color and prints myself (along with whites and earth tones), so mixing patterns and different shades is something I’ve often played around with… Bright pomelo shades mixed with coral-colored brocade pants Mango-yellow accent shade & yellow brocade mixed with neutrals Streaks of salmon, pink and red mixed with woven off-white satin Photo-printed apples with shiny black vinyl was my first collection (ever!) Yellow paint splatters mixed with navy & white stripes Pinks and greys in tiny checks mix with bold plaid & lace appliqués Stripes & geometric prints in one of my favorites dresses…a silk ikat-print shift Clean, bold, geometric stripes or a mix of bright summer colors & prints In my opinion, the trick to mixing colors and prints is to start off simple…add one bold color (think grass green, apple red, lemon yellow or tangerine) to an otherwise neutral outfit.  If you can handle more, mix two or three colors in similar shades and keep your accessories neutral (fuschia and red/blue, green and violet with dark brown leather accessories, for example). As you become more comfortable with...
